Executive Director

I started A3S to combat social isolation and foster community connections through the power of board games. I believe that cooperative gaming can:

  • Build meaningful relationships

  • Enhance social skills

  • Promote mental well-being

  • Create a sense of belonging

By organizing regular events and partnering with local businesses, we aim to create welcoming spaces where people can come together, have fun, and form lasting friendships.

Research on Social isolatioN

Recent studies have highlighted that adults are feeling increasingly isolated and lonely, and several have shown that board games can help.

  • A 2023 study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that regular participation in board game nights was associated with reduced feelings of loneliness and increased social satisfaction among adults.

  • A 2019 study published by the National Library of Medicine point to a number of studies that how that friend relationships are as important as family ties in predicting psychological well-being, and states that social isolation places older adults in jeopardy for both poor health and low psychological well-being.

  • In 2023, the US Surgeon General issued an advisory: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. The advisory clearly lays out how lack of social connection can have significant negative health, mental, and economic impacts.

These findings support our belief in both the importance of reducing loneliness and the transformative power of board gaming as a tool for building community.
